It was such a pleasure to interview the wonderful Galina Kurlat for the Women Alternative Photography Group interview series. Head on over to the WAPG website to read the interview.

Galina Kurlat is a photographic artist living in Brooklyn, NY, she earned her BFA in Media Arts from Pratt Institute. Kurlat creates a visual relationship between herself and her subject by embracing the imperfections and possibilities of antiquated photographic processes. Her works undulate between the recognizable and the ephemeral. By accepting the change and chaos inherent in photographic materials Kurlat challenges photography as a historically representational medium.

397A Sustainable Approaches to Photography

Yesterday I found out that my Sustainable Approaches to Photography class has finally been approved at WWU for Summer quarter.

WWU students sign up on classfinder as soon as it's available!!!

I've been working on the research, writing the proposal, putting together the syllabus and navigating the process of many different committee meetings to try to get this class approved for the past eight months.

Massive thank you to Lisa and Sasha for helping me work through the tricky process of getting a class approved.

This class will explore some of my favorite alternative photography processes like anthotypes and plant based developers. And we will be looking at some of the new exciting research that is currently being explored on these topics.

I've been investigating more sustainable approaches within my own practice for many years attending workshops from The Sustainable Darkroom, reading as many academic papers and publications on the topic, and learning from other inspiring artists like Kari Varner, Melanie King, and Megan Bent. While I still have so much to learn and in no way am an expert on the topic I'm so excited to start the conversation at WWU and help students embrace photography with the planet in mind.

🎉 Celebrating our 20th WAPG Interview 🎉

Wowzers I started WAPG 2 years ago with the goal to publish monthly interviews on all the inspiring artists using alternative photography. While it hasn't been exactly monthly I am so proud to have hit this milestone.

And what an incredible interview to have as our 20th WAPG Interview!!!

In this instalment I had the absolute pleasure of learning all about Miami based artist and writer Isabella Marie Garcia and how she has been working with folks in the juvenile justice system. It was my absolute honour to interview Sujata Setia about her empowering project A Thousand Cuts.

"In her body of work A Thousand Cuts Sujata Setia examines patterns of domestic abuse within South Asian communities. This powerful body of work employs the South Asian art of paper cutting, known as Sanghi Art, to slice into the surface of photographs depicting victims of domestic abuse. This unique mark making technique results in striking images that reveal a bold red colour beneath. Sujata provides a space of healing, empowering victims to share their stories."

It was absolute pleasure to host the WAPG Online Meet Up featuring presentations from Amanda Couch (UK), Maedeh Ojaghloo (Iran/US), and Cara Jaye (US). Amanda Couch shared her inspiring performative pinhole work and her investigations into anthotypes. Maedeh Ojaghloo's powerful presentation investigated honour killings in Iran and Cara Jaye shared new work created during a residency in Mexico City that explores plastic pollution.

It was my absolute pleasure to be interviewed for and featured in Laura Perdrizet's paper and presentation "Pioneering Practices: Contemporary Female Photographers Working With Alternative Photo Processes" at the Women of Photography 24 Hour Conference-a-thon.

Laura Perdrizet is an Artist and Scholar based in the US invested in the future of Creative Practice Research.

Laura Perdrizet, MFA, Artist & Scholar, New York City, U.S.A. >Pioneering Practices: Contemporary Female Photographers Working With Alternative Photo Processes

My paper presents a survey of contemporary female photographers who work with cyanotype and other alternative photographic processes; at once illustrating the aesthetics and issues related to their experimental practices. Inspired by English botanist and pioneering female photographer, Anna Atkins, this paper explores how women working in alternative photography today are innovators, exposing how experimentation and craft are prioritized as they practice in the margins.

Present day alt-photo practices embody the values of contemporary art: art-making is conceptually informed, materiality is central to the process and product, and experimentation is valued over tradition. Widely practiced in the 21st century, female artists are utilizing new technologies, tools, and experimental techniques to create new forms, and as a result are establishing new aesthetics in contemporary photography. Through interviews and artwork images, this presentation investigates the concept of “the pioneer,” addressing the embedded issues from past to present in gender equity and practice, shedding light on the artists’ innovations in photographic art and their resulting impact.
