'Joan' looks at the importance of place, family, and memory through cataloging plant life with cyanotypes. After the death of my step grandmother my father and i traveled from Tennessee to Washington state in five days driving a U-Haul full of Joan's old photographs, furniture, and loved possessions. We drove through ten different states only ever stopping to fill up on gas, grab a bite to eat, or sleep. In each state I gathered plant samples growing outside of gas stations, restaurants, motels, and the side of the road. Capturing the flora of these 'non places' documented the journey we took to bring Joan's possessions home. Through the methodical documentation of plant life on our road trip from Tennessee to Washington state I was able to establish a deeper understanding of Joan's immigration story. Each cyanotype served as a catalyst for discussion. Each story revealing details about her journey from Scotland to America as a young woman. I was able to draw connections between Joan's experience and my own.
